Britons buy a third of online goods in Europe

Britons spend more money online than anyone else in Europe.

British consumers collectively spent about £38billion online last year.

Online sales grew by 12 % despite being in a recession, with purchases from the internet making up 9.5%of all retail sales in the country.

And the online market here will continue to expand during 2010, growing by 12.4% to £42 billion, it is predicted.

These facts are staggering, but not unbelievable. As more and more people become confident at using their computers at home and are happy with the security, these figures cannot be ignored. If you own your own business and do not have an online presence, I think its probably time that you started to think about where that might leave you.

There are of course certain things that would be difficult to sell solely online and I speak from experience when I talk about fashion. As a woman there is something pleasurable about going into a store and trying on the potential purchase as it never looks the same on the model as it does on me. Having said that, Asos.com are booming so there is something to be said for it. I think the key is balancing working women’s free time with their need to shop for a special outfit.
