More More Morley
I went along to the Morley Town Centre Partnership meeting at the Town Hall last night for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised.
The Deputy Major of Morley, Steve Jones, chaired the meeting and attending were an array of people, all who had a vested interest in the well being of our town.
The meeting was opened with Councillor Jones welcoming everyone and talking about how Morley was in the process of creating a mission of intent which will encourage further footfall into the town, increase opportunities for new start up businesses and generally make Morley a great place to be.
There were discussions about Yorkshire Day, Morley Chamber of Trade and Commerce and how there were great plans afoot for local businesses and how the next Town Awards ceremony and St Georges Day would be bigger and better than ever.
Councillor Jones had earlier told me that historically Morley was run by business people who believed in justice and fair play and they hated to be controlled by Leeds. They even built their own reservoir. When Queen Victoria reigned she granted Morley Town independent status, but in 1974 Leeds took it back.
He said, “Victorian businesses built Morley to be what it is today. They are our inspiration. Their drive and enthusiasm still exists and makes us who we are, and it’s up to us to make sure that we don’t let them down.”
With events like the Literature Festival, St. George’s Day and Yorkshire Day, Morley is truly the trendsetter that other towns and cities aspire to be. I for one, am proud to be a citizen of Morley Town.
